A short walk will take you to the Campbell Homestead.
Born in 1888, Archie W. Campbell the youngest of 12 children, spent his entire life on this farm. The property was owned by his family for over 100 years. Archie received more education than most young people of his time. After he left public school, he walked to the Alvinston Continuation School, located 3 miles over the hills. The young people in the community gathered many evenings in the old house, to discuss topics of the day with Archie, and to sing around the family organ.
Mr. Campbell was a bachelor, and he was especially interested in political activities. He helped draft the Constitution of the Canadian Social Credit Party, and worked with Mr. William Aberhardt, who later became Premier of Alberta. At a later date, Mr. Campbell assisted in the organization of another political party, the United Farmers of Ontario.
At one time in his life, Mr. Campbell was interested in oil deposits in the Caribbean which earned him a local nickname of “Jamaica Archie”.
Archie was very interested in Conservation, at a time when most people felt there was little need to save forests or lands for future generations. A term of his will was that his farm was to be purchased, at reduced cost, by the Sydenham Valley Conservation Authority (now known as the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority). Some of the large trees in the woodlots on the property indicate his desire to save as many trees as possible, rather than having them cut for lumber.
A few years before his 1965 death, Archie W. Campbell remarked, “My farm will make a nice park for a lot of people, someday!”
If the gate is locked, some parking is available outside the gate. A fee box is available when the gate attendant is not present,
