You are on a search for Sheamus O'Reilly's Gold! Sheamus is a displaced leprechaun who loves to play tricks on unsuspecting hikers. He is not alone in these woods. Your search will have you seeking the help of his closest friend, Patches O'Toole. Only Patches will be able to tell you where to go, and he's hiding. The two of them are playing on the Wappinger Creek GREENway of course.
Start your quest at the above coordinates. There you will find an important sign that many of us overlook. At the bottom of the sign, there is a phone number that all hikers in this county should know. Your first task is to put the phone number into this format:
ABC-DEF-GHJK
Now put the numbers into the following coordinates:
N 41* 42.1EG
w 073* 51.DH9
This will give you the location of Patches. Head off down the trail and be alert for his tricks. Stay on the trail as it passes private property. There is no need to tresspass at all. The trail is well marked with YELLOW diamonds. Patches likes to watch people go by and is always VERY close to the trail, but catching him will require some skill. As he is a small guy, he has developed a bit of a complex and likes to look down on people as they go by.
Capture him and he will devulge the secret spot to find Sheamus. Again, stay on the trail. You will find yourself making a decision when you are around 150' from your goal. Pick your way in wisely as there are prickers and thorns. You didn't think finding leprechaun gold would be too easy now did you? When you find Sheamus, please take note of how he is hidden and replace him the same way as there are muggles along these banks. The log book is a little different, so just sign your name and date and feel free to comment on the cache page. Sheamus would like all trade items to be GREEN or GOLD for obvious reasons.
I hope you enjoy your hike that should be around 2 miles along the Wappinger Greenway Trail to parts that many people have not ventured. There has been a lot of work done here, especially after the April flood a couple of years ago that swallowed up everything you see. You'll still be able to make out some of the watermarks to see how high it got. The trail is open from dawn to dusk and can get muddy. Some spots can get standing water that can be avoided easily. Wear appropriate footwear no matter when you go. Enjoy.
