Groesbeck / Rivard
Mt. Elliott Cemetary is Detroit's oldest extant cemetary, started by the Catholic community in 1841. Several cholora and other disease outbreaks quickly filled the small church plots, making it necessary to build a larger cemetary to fill the needs of Detroit's growing population. This consecrated ground was chosen on the outskirts of town alongside Parent Creek (which is in Elmwood Cemetary next door). and is named for architect Robert T Elliott, who developed the cemetary, and ironicly was the first interment. Remains from Detroit's St Anne's cemetary were then brought here, where many French, German and Irish surnames abound. The tombstones reflect family names well known in the tri county area, Beaubien, Campau, Caniff, Chene, Moross, Groesbeck, etc. These REligious, business and political leaders have left their names on buildings, roads and landmarks. Military burials include those who served in Napolean's army, the war of 1812, the Civil War, World Wars I & II and Vietnam.
These coordinates will bring you to the Groesbeck plot, where my great and great great grandparents are buried.
