Geocache Description:

The Witherle Woods trail is an easy-to-moderate one, perfect for families with young kids.

The Witherle Woods 185 acres is located in Castine, ME and is managed by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. These caches are placed with their permission. A special thanks to Douglas McMullin for his help in allowing these caches to be placed in this beautiful spot.

The Witherle Woods trail is an easy-to-moderate one, perfect for families with young kids. The short incline from the parking lot is the steepest climb you will encounter. After that the trails are gently rolling to a very gradual incline.

Historically, the trails were first used as artillery roads by the British during both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. There has been archeological work conducted in the preserve mapping out Revolutionary War features regarding skirmishes between the British and our forces. As a result, some areas are considered historically sensitive so stay to the trails as much as possible. The trails were expanded later, by Mr. George Witherle, for whom the woods were named. He used them as carriage trails.

A micro-burst hit the area on Sept. 26, 2007 and caused great devastation which will be obvious as you walk the trails. In some areas, 100 per cent of the trees were knocked down. The restoration process is on-going still.

Park at the posted parking coordinates. Do not enter the woods from other locations as this will require crossing private property.

There is parking for 3-4 vehicles.

This cache is named after one of our grandsons who loves to go geocaching with us. His favorite type of cache is the ammo can because it usually contains things he likes to find. This cache is an ammo can hidden in a spot that will clearly show the path of the micro-burst that hit the area in 2007. It also provides a great view of the water and surrounding area. Following the trails will bring you close to the cache...within 30-40 ft.
