Geocache Description:

This cache is located in an abandoned cemetery. We found this cemetery while taking a different road into Leavenworth one day a few years ago. We were appalled at the way it was overgrown and unattended. It seemed like these people were forgotten. Well, "Dear Gertie" should not be forgotten.

The cemetery is located on the grounds of the Little Stranger Church. It was built in 1867. It was built by a Christian congregation that moved to this area from Farley, Missouri. They purchased the land from the U.S. government. The present road covers ruts made by the wagons of travelers on the Santa Fe trail. This church was vacated in 1918 and became a community center for all the people of the Boling area. This too has been abandoned.

Last fall they started to clean up the cemetery grounds. There are many old and broken monuments. The grass (weeds) were overgrown and the lilies are totally out of control. Hopefully the cleanup will continue this spring. Please feel free to pick up limbs and place them in the trash pile. Any extra effort will help make this peaceful place a little nicer.

There is a place to pull off the road but no road into the cemetery. Also, there is a wire across a road which is now being used to let mowers and workers into the church yard. You will need to step over a short wire to enter the cemetery. Once you are up a slight incline the area is flat but it may be overgrown.

This is a micro cache and the container is only big enough for a log book. Please bring your own writing instrument to sign the log.

Please be respectful of the area and have a great time geocaching.
