Geocache Description:

Quick cache and dash, parking adjacent, but beware of fast moving traffic, please....

Placed to complement and expand upon Alibali's GC1B0YX
The Mussell Road and bring it a little closer upto date.

The St Andrews Golf Links, before golf, formed part of the lands of the nearby Strathtyrum Estate. The links were purchased for the formation of the original courses way back then but, as always in deals like this, there was a little known caveat which continues to have a wee sting in the tale.....

From the cache location you will see the large, freshly painted and maintained closed gates upon the driveway leading up to Strathtyrum House. Notice anything strange about the driveway?

Its made of seashells. So what, I hear?

The shells come from what is now the famous links courses and the descendants of the estate still have the right and requirement to dig shells from the links course as and when they see fit in order to recover their driveway.

Imagine someone taking a spade to the 18th of the Old just as the Championship winning put was to be played??

The modern reality is that the Links Trust, caretakers of the links, supply shells for the driveway as required in order to reduce the probability of an errantly timed spadefest - but I understand that one spadefull per year must be turned by hand in order to keep the right in existance!

Placed for the Langspoon 2009 and thus not loggable until the event. ta....
