SITE OF THE GHOST TOWN OF CRESCENT
Crescent was a short-lived mining community which grew up around a turquoise strike made by a Native American prospector known as Prospector Johnnie in the late 1890s. Mexican miners had worked the area in the late 1860s and early 1870s, but their efforts were ended by a renegade Mormon group who raided the camp and killed many of the miners. Johnnie’s backers created the Toltec Gem Company, which lasted about three years, with other miners working turquoise claims until about 1906.

In 1904, gold was discovered, and by 1905 300 claims had been filed. The town of Crescent was developed and opened the same year. Though a relatively mild boom, within a few months there were six saloons, a newspaper, the Crescent Times, restaurants, a union hall, and a school district. The town site only lasted about two years, beginning to disband in 1906.

A failed revival in 1908, and later the reopening of the Big Tiger mine in 1916 led to a few miners returning to the area, but not for very long. Today, there is mining activity along SR 68 on the California border, but the ghost town is gone.
