MT. POTOSI
In 1856, mining began on Mt. Potosi when Mormon prospectors from the nearby Las Vegas Mission discovered a promising source of lead. Though the site was initially promising, mining by the Mormon settlers ended in 1857, as the lead was not worth the effort, given the difficulty of getting the ore from the mine.

Eventually, other prospectors found the site, and the mine was worked on and off throughout the nineteenth century. During World War I, the mine was a significant producer of zinc, but with the end of the war, the mine was closed. Near here, movie actress Carole Lombard was killed in a tragic aircraft accident in 1942, while on a war bond rally trip.
