Geocache Description:

Coal Center, Pennsylvania

About the Cache
This cache is a magnetic nano located in Dowler Park in Coal Center, Pennsylvania (N40°04.253' W079°53.979') .  The
park provides a relaxing view of the Monongahela river.  This is a pretty quiet spot.  But depending on the time of day, there is usually a steady stream of muggles coming and going because of the restuarant across the street.  There is plenty of street parking. Bring a Pen! There are two garbage cans available so CITO.

Take notice that I rated the terrain as 1 so you do NOT have to stand on or climb anything.

A Quick History Lesson
Coal Center is a borough in Washington County, PA along the Monongahela River.  Coal Center was originally known as Greenfield which was laid out in 1814 by Robert Jackman Jr. who inherited the land from his father, Robert Sr.  Robert Jackman Sr. had purchased the land from Nathan Lynn in 1784.  When Lynn owned the land he called it Ararat.  A mine was opened in 1820.  This was probably the first mining site in Washington County and one of the first commerical mines in the United States.  It was incorpated as a borough in 1834.  In 1883, the name was changed to Coal Center.

A Quick Bridge Lesson
Down the road from this cache you will see a historic one-lane truss bridge.  This bridge's official name is the Coal Center Bridge but is better known as the Water Street Bridge.  The bridge was constructed in 1888 by Penn Bridge Company.  For those of you who are interested in bridges, this is considered a pratt through truss bridge.  The bridge is a little over 100 feet long with a width of 16 feet and crosses Pike Run which is annually stocked with rainbow and brown trout and classified as "Approved Trout Water".

When You Are at the Cache Location
Directly in front of you is the Monongahela River, better known as the Mon by the locals.  To your right is the Boat Club.
And, directly behind you on Spring St. you will see Lagerheads, a resturaunt/bar.  Lagerheads used to be called the Coal Bin, but I am unsure of any other history.  All I know is that if you are hungry, it is a great place to eat.
