Geocache Description:

Tube shaped cache with a few swaps, log book, pen etc. Cache is hidden on top of Swifts Hill overlooking the Slad Valley. Its a very steep incline up to the cache hence terrain rating.

This is our second Cache placement in the Slad Valley where we live. We are very proud of the area and want people to come and enjoy the views and local Pub and hospitality the village is reknown for.

A little about the cache location:

Location and access: Take the Stroud to Slad road (B4070) and a lane off of this to Elcombe - approx. one and a half miles from Stroud. The hill is common land and therefore unfenced and widely used by the public. A small layby and quarry area can be used for parking.

Features:
More widely known as Swift's Hill, Elliott Reserve (named after the previous owner) lies on the eastern side of the Slad valley. The Reserve has eleven orchid species regularly occuring including pyramidal, fragrant, autumn lady's-tresses and the bee orchid. It has a wide range of other wildflowers and shrubs and supports good populations of butterflies such as the small blue, dingy skipper and green hairstreak. Slow-worm and common lizard are present as are the uncommon stripe-winged and rufous grasshoppers. As befits its name, the hill is circled by swifts in summer and other breeding birds include skylark, meadow and tree pipits and green woodpeckers who feed on the numerous ant-hills. The hill also contains a small old quarry where fossil-rich ragstones are exposed and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for studying the geology of the Middle Jurassic period.
