Geocache Description:

On the first leg of the Hudson Bay Brigade Trail from Fort Kamloops to Fort Alexandria

The North West Company established trading posts first in the north of BC in what they called New Caledonia, then on the banks of the Columbia River. East-west trade was a supply line all the way from Montreal through the Fraser and Nechako systems to the north, but overland north-south through Fort Kamloops and Fort Okonogan down to Fort Astoria, with furs traveling south in the spring and supplies traveling north in the fall. When British- American disputes closed trade south of the 49th parallel, the newly merged Hudson Bay Company established Fort Langley, then Fort Hope to support trade to and from the Interior. A brigade route was established through the Cascades to Fort Kamloops, then northwest towards 100 Mile House and up the Fraser to Fort Alexandria. The HBC Brigade Trail from Kamloops to 100 Mile House crossed the hills north of Kamloops Lake from 1843 through 1869.
The HBC Brigade Trail left Fort Kamloops (which in its 4th location was on the west side of the confluence of the rivers), crossed the Thompson River (probably at Rabbit Island), then traveled west along the north shore of the Thompson River towards Tranquille Creek. The cache is placed along this corridor and is the first in a series of caches along this historical route. Further caches will be placed along the brigade route between Kamloops and 100 Mile House.

The next 3 legs heading west are HBC Brigade Trail: Dewdrop, followed by Gold Country GeoTour: Hudson Bay Company Brigade Trail (I did the write up and chose the location), then HBC Brigade Trail: Sabiston Lake.
