GREAT ON A BIKE!!!         GREAT ON A BIKE!!!

This letterbox will take you on a trip down Eighth Street in Davis. This is a great street for a bike ride or a stroll, but--sigh--if you choose to seek this cache by car, there is ample parking along the way. I have placed a couple of caches along this beautiful street--have fun finding them! Bring a pen or pencil. This one is a 2.5-star difficulty because you have to assemble four pieces of information to determine a "target number," while still keeping track of how many north-south streets you have crossed. If doing that is easy for you, then you might wonder why this wasn't rated D1.5.

To find this cache, you will travel west, counting up all of the intersections along the way. If you come to a street where you can turn left only, count that as 1. If you come to a street where you can turn right only, count that as 1 also. If you come to a street where you can turn left or right, count that as 2. When you reach the target number, you will be where the cache is!

Okay, let's get started! Part 1: The posted coordinates place you on the north side of Eighth Street, where you will notice some brightly colored "structures" that in the summertime are used as planters. They are all along the south-facing fence. Count these structures. This is the first ingredient for your target number. Now head west and begin counting north-south streets you have crossed with a street on your right. This street is #1.

Part 2: Before you count streets 2 and 3, cross Eighth Street and locate the bench at N 38° 33.035 W 121° 45.350. Read the plaque on the bench. The first line of text has two words; note the first letter of the second word. If A=1 to Z=26, what is the value of the first letter of the second word? Add it to your answer from Part 1. This isn't your target number yet, but you're well on your way!

Part 3: From the bench, head north (and a tiny bit west) to the sidewalk; before you cross back over Eighth Street, you will see a metal light post. (On March 31, 2012, the digits 161 were visible on the post.) The post has 0-9 metal bands wrapped around it. Look higher than 3 feet elevation and lower than 12 feet. Multiply the number of metal bands by 7. Your answer ends in what digit? Add your Part 3 result to your result from Parts 1 and 2. Not your target number yet, but time to continue heading west and counting those intersections!

Part 4: Just as you are about to count 4 and 5 to the north-south running streets -- remember, a street where you can both turn left or turn right counts double -- notice the brightly colored house on the southeast corner. Did you ever learn "ROYGBIV" as a way to remember the color spectrum? Make this adjustment to what you obtained from Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3: If this house is red, add 1; if orange, add 2; if yellow, add 3; if green, add 4; if blue, add 5; if indigo, add 6; and if violet, add 7.

Congratulations, you now have the target number! You should still be on the north side of Eighth Street (if you're not, get back over there!). Keep heading west till your count matches the target number. Immediately after you have reached this magic number, you'll notice a metal sign post. The cache is magnetic, stuck to the post, just less than a foot off the ground. Congratulations!

Please bring paper and your own stamp, if you have one. When you find the letterbox:

1) Sign your name and the date, and if you have your own stamp, then stamp it in the visitor’s log.

2) Stamp the letterbox stamp on your own paper/book as a remembrance of your visit.

3) A letterbox (hybrid) is related to geocaching in that you start out with lat-long coordinates, switch to letterboxing instructions, then you can log your find on the geocaching website. In addition, they have trade items, can be used to exchange travel bugs, and they count towards your geocache totals.
Please do not take the STAMP as a trade item.
