Located in the Grafton Ponds Natural Area Preserve of Newport News Park near the intersection of Ft. Eustis Blvd and Richneck Rd. Cacher must cross 2 shallow(usually dry) streams to reach cache. It is located at the end of a fire trail.
J.R.R. Tolkien fans know that the Ents are an ancient tree-like race of Middle Earth that serves as shepherds of the trees. They protect the forest from Dwarves and other perils and were taught to speak by the Elves. Ents are similar in appearance to the trees they watch over. They are tall and very strong, capable of tearing apart rock and stones. When Ents become enraged even the power of their voices causes great destruction. Enemies who harm the trees under the care of an Ent will find themselves in grave danger.
Our cache, a medium sized lock and lock container, lies under the canopy of a very large oak. This tree has been attacked by a giant poison ivy vine so it may be irritable. Use caution when searching for the cache lest you come too close and anger this forest guardian.
The cache can be reached by parking at gate F4 at Newport News Park. This is at the intersection of Fort Eustis Boulevard and Richneck Road. (Currently there are 3 other caches located near here.) Please don’t block the gate. Do not park along Fort Eustis Boulevard. At the gate go NE following the faint trail and pick up the old mountain bike trail which will lead along a circuitous route to a fire trail. Bushwhacking will be required if you wish to take a more direct route. The cache is located closer to gate F5. However, NN Park rangers do not recommend parking there as there is no place to turn around and in order to access the cache one has to climb over a broken down wire fence which is dangerous.
This cache has been approved by and registered with
the Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation &
Tourism. Registration # 0158.
Congratulations to The Caching Crew on the FTF.
