Geocache Description:

View of the Balclutha bridge from the north

Built in 1935 the Balclutha bridge is the third bridge to be built over the mighty Clutha river. the first was opened in 1868 and got washed away 10yrs later in 14th - 16th October 1878, when the bridge at Clydevale was washed down stream and collided with the Balclutha bridge. The second was opened in 1891 and was replaced by the one that stands today.

The Balclutha bridge is 244m long and 11.8m wide, and 4355 cubic meters of concrete was used in the construction of it.
