Geocache Description:

A nice quick P&G with a history lesson

This is a historical site with a nice info sign. Who would have guessed that this place was once covered in glaciers?

The Kutenai Indians grew tobacco in this area, hence the name tobacco plains.
In 1808 David Thompson explored the area, and the Kootenai River.
In the mid 1860's many gold prospectors came to the area hoping for the same luck that was happening in the Wild Horse area in BC. They didn't find gold, but didn't leave empty handed. The area was rich with resources so farmers, cattlemen and loggers could make a good go at it.
Steamboats filled the river in the 1890's to bring products, mail, and people to the area, and then in 1901 the Great Northern Railway tracked it's way here and made many a good cache hiding spot.........
