A walk up an old road, a gradual climb most of the way, just over a mile hike and 900' elevation gain from trailhead. Cache is a sandwich sized Lock N Lock box.
The Harding Road Gulf cache is hidden on a trail that used to be the old carriage road to the Hotel Kaaterskill built on the top of South Mountain. The road was built in 1880-81. Start the hike at the trailhead on Rte 23A just west of the hamlet of Palenville and just east of the Catskill Park sign. There is an information board there and a nice map of the trails in the area. Walk past the gate and then you will turn left and parallel Rte 23A uphill. Soon you will pass the yellow trail to the right which goes to another parking area at the end of White Road. Continue up the trail (red markers). Later, you will pass a registration box. Also, there is another cache (Rockin' Up Hill) very close by. There is a nice view across the clove from here. Continue on to cache location at The Gulf, a ravine in the north side of the Kaaterskill Clove. This Gulf was formed by waters that escaped from a glacial lake above. The trail has eroded here, and you will also see stone walls and the remains of a stone culvert. The trail ends 1.5 miles further up and joins the Escarpment (blue) and a yellow horse trail. The Catskill Mountain House Trail Guide has a nice description of this hike and of the history of this area.
