“Indiana Spirit Quest”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by SixDogTeam. In just over four years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over seven hundred caches and the hiders have grown to fifty cacher teams in 5 states and one province, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

"Home In The Wilderness"

WELCOME TO POWERS CEMETERY
York Township, Steuben County, Indiana




 On July 8th, 1937, the descendants of the original Powers brothers dedicated a monument to their accomplishments. This historical marker was placed to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Powers home being built.

In 1837, two of the Powers brothers traveled from Ontario County, New York to this spot. They were scouting a place for them, and their three other brothers, to settle and raise their families.

The brothers were Stephen A., Winn, Clark, Josiah, and Calvin. Calvin lost his first wife on the trip, but remarried before arriving in, what is now, York Township.

The first birth in York Twp. was Volney Powers, whose parents were Stephen A. and Mary Ann. The first death was in 1938 to William and Betsy's son Mowry. The log cabin the brothers built at this site became the first schoolhouse until 1844, when the York Schoolhouse was built on land owned by Stephen A. Powers. Winn Powers was the first teacher in the Township. Stephen A. also went on to become the first Justice Of The Peace, In 1845, Clark Powers built the first sawmill.

"Powers Church" was built in 1876, on land donated by Clark Powers. The church was also known as the "Free Church", as it was created to be non-denominational. The last regular services were held in the 1920s. The church was restored in 1976, and is now on the National Register Of Historical Places.

The cache container is a good-sized lock-n-lock. The cache is not located near a grave. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground or replace it. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
