Geocache Description:

Another stroll round Wokingham to pick up clues.

Note: I have moved the cache and redone the calculations and hint appropriately. It is a magnetic container.

For those who enjoyed Wandering 'wound Wokingham (WwW) – here's a very similar set of caches. Its also a little bit harder but a shorter distance from start to finish.

What is the cache?

This cache requires you to visit a number of locations in the central area of Wokingham (Berkshire). Having solved a clue from each location you'll be able to determine/calculate the location of the final cache. The nature of the series of locations will become apparent very quickly! The theme is a little different from WwW - in this case each building to be found clearly displays a 'Wotsit' (whose nature will become obvious once the first one is found!). For the purist, there should be 10 items in this set - but one is some way out of town so I've left it out.

Where are the clues?

The route takes you from one end of the town to the other - but never out into the suburbs. The published coordinates of the cache relate to the first clue in the table below. The clues all need to be visited and unlike WwW they MUST be tackled in the order given below, because each one depends upon the one before. The route between clues depends on exactly which streets you take but isn't critical and there's no intentional back tracking in the order I've chosen.

How far is it?

The total distance is about 1 miles - certainly less than an hour's walking.

What's the going like?

The terrain is of course urban, so it's plain easy walking - and Wokingham centre doesn't have any hills. But a point to remember - buildings tend to spoil reception sometimes - and of course young children need supervising.

Can I have a hint?

The information you need to find about each location is itself a help in finding it. I haven't bothered with the normal "Additional Hints" section this time - there's just a hint to the final cache. But the difficulty rating is 'pretty easy' - you should find all this a doddle.

So off we go:

Answer

1

N51 24.735
W 000 50.305

Count the number of dormer windows on the roof and let this be number "A"

2

N51 24.72{A+2}
W 000 50.278

B = the number of brick steps outside the front door

3

N51 24.64{B}
W 000 50.073

C= the direction the 'Wotsit' faces: NW=2, NE=4, SE=6, SW=8

4

N51 24.{C}20
W 000 50.020

D = the number of arched doorways on the front

5

N51 24.6{D}5
W 000 50.045

E = the material of the wall holding the 'Wotsit: Brick=2, Stone=4, Concrete=6, Wood=8

6

N51 24.71{E}
W 000 49.880

F = the number of keyholes in the front door

7

N51 24.67{F}
W 000 49.815

G = the number of front doors in the block displaying the 'Wotsit'

8

N51 24.61{G}
W 000 49.740

H = the last digit of the year on the foundation stone

9

N51 24.62{H-1}
W 000 49.635

I = the colour of the Welcome sign: Red=1, Blue=2, Yellow=3, Green=4

Now to determine the final location, you need to do these calculations:

a=E
b=I
c=C
d=G-H
e=D
f=F+H
g=C+D-H
h=F+I
i=A+B
j=B+G

and the 'cache' is at N51 ab.cde W000 fg.hij

The final cache is a now a magnetic container with just a log in, after the original went AWOL. It's quite a public area, so please be careful when collecting and retrieving it - AND please wrap the log up well to keep it dry.
