Geocache Description:

Hoggs Falls

This cache is a regular lock 'n lock container hidden close to the Bruce Trail on the longer of the two Hogg's Falls Loops.

Hogg's Falls, and Hogg’s Hollow in mid-town Toronto, are both named after the family of William Hogg. Hogg’s Falls is a smaller, less spectacular neighbour of nearby Eugenia Falls, but it is also a beautiful, undeveloped waterfall. It is located at the extreme south end of the Beaver Valley near where the Boyne River joins the Beaver River.

Hogg’s Falls is classified as a plunge waterfall, but unlike most plunge falls, there is no obvious weaker base rock. Usually plunge waterfalls have a hard rock layer overtop of a weaker rock, like shale. The face of this waterfall consists of similar rock from top to bottom, and as a result, you don't see large blocks of dolostone littering the base of the falls like at so many other falls along the Niagara Escarpment.

This section of the Bruce Trail is part of the Upper Beaver Valley Extension, a new reroute of the Bruce Trail. Because of the prevalence of small waterfalls along this route, this new 30km loop has been christened the Falling Water Loop. The Hogg’s Falls trails are connected to this loop, but are much shorter in length. The shorter Hogg's Falls loop trail is only 1.8 km, and the longer loop trail is 4.8 km in length. When in pursuit of this cache, we encourage you to walk the entire loop to fully experience the beauty of the Hogg's Falls area.

The posted coordinates are for a parking area where you can find out more about the history of Hogg's Falls from an interpretive sign, and from which you can access the falls and hiking loops. To determine the coordinates for the final location of the cache, do the following:

Step 1: Solve the Sudoku puzzle. To solve, fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9. There is only 1 solution possible to the puzzle.

Step 2: Use the numbers from the appropriate boxes on the Sudoku to determine the following coordinates:

North Coordinates 44 HO.GGS
West Coordinates 080 FA.LLS

These coordinates are for a point on the longer of the two Hogg's Falls loops, close to the final cache location.

Step 3: Add 0.00? to both the north and west coordinates. You will find the missing digit on the Hogg's Falls interpretive sign in the parking area. It is the number of waterfalls listed at the bottom of the sign. This will give you the actual cache location, which is about 10-15 metres off of the trail. Unfortunately, this sign was vandalized (see logs posted April 29 & 30, 2010), so you will now have to use the picture posted on this page, entitled "Waterfalls".

Be sure to visit Valleyone's Hogg's Falls cache while you are in the area, and please remember to always practise Cache In, Trash Out.
