Geocache Description:

NOTE: Serious geocachers carry their own tools. There may or may not be a pen in the cache!

This is one of a series of caches that commemorate the fourteen Division 1-A football national championships* won by The University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Each cache represents one of the NC wins, and includes a brief story about the team. Links to the other hides in this series can be found in the bookmark listing to the right.

*There is a lot of debate among fans, foes, and interested observers on the real number. The actual number lies between 9 and 20. See (visit link) if you are a glutton for punishment...At any rate, 14 is what is claimed by the University, so 14 caches. Deal with it.

This cache commemorates the 1973 Alabama Crimson Tide team. The 1973 Alabama Crimson Tide completed the regular season 11-0-0, winning the SEC championship. Alabama was then invited to play Notre Dame in the December 31, 1973 Sugar Bowl. Coach Bryant's team lost to the Fighting Irish 24-23 to finish the season 11-1-0. Prior the bowl, the Coaches' Poll - which still voted before the bowl games - awarded the Crimson Tide their 1973 national championship. Because of the controversy after the bowl loss, the Coaches Poll began selecting their champion after the bowl games starting in 1974.
