Geocache Description:

Welcome to Pipsico Scout Reservation! This camp is open year-round to Scouters. Please do not go into the camp unless you are going to an organized event.

This is just a quick park and grab and last in a series of caches on the way to Camp Pipsico, Tidewater Council, Boy Scouts of America’s Scout Reservation.

Pipsico Scout Reservation is located in Surry County, Virginia. It encompasses more than 900 acres of woodland, open fields and marshes. The terrain includes a natural ravine system and ranges in elevation from 20 to more than 100 feet above sea level. Pipsico Scout Reservation's northern boundary extends for a mile and half along the banks of the historic James River.

Cliffs 60 to 75 feet high overlook a picturesque mile long sandy beach and several cypress tree coves. The cliff walls are studded with marine shells and fossils providing tangible evidence of the James River's influence on life over the centuries. The beach has proven to be a beach comber's delight for discovering nautical treasures like shark teeth, prehistoric whale bones, driftwood and a peaceful observation site for beautiful shoreline sunrises and sunsets.

Tidewater Council purchased this land in 1958. It has been preserved and maintained as close to its natural state as possible. The "Red Trail" hiking trail that encircles the reservation provides a variety of visual and ecological wonders for hikers of all ages to marvel at. The"Pipsico Tree" is on this trail. It is a tulip poplar nearly 20 feet in circumference that predates the arrival of the first English colonists. Bald Eagles can be seen along the sandy beach of the James River. They can be observed in flight and a pair is nesting on the reservation. Scouts can hike through the wooded areas and imagine themselves as one of the early settlers and experience the history that is part of this land!

Pipsico is a reservation made up of several different camps covering 900 acres. The style of camping ranges from wilderness camping to a traditional summer camp in "Lions." During the summer and special events, the boys can try their hand at camping, hiking, orienteering, geocaching, canoeing and kyaking, fishing, rock climbing and repelling on the tower, archery, bb shooting, rifle and shot gun shooting, crafts, nature, swimming and sailing.

Programs like this prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

I wanted to make these caches relatively easy so the Cub Scouts could find them. You can pull off the road with-in feet of the cache, just please be careful with the children. The road is not heavily traveled. The cache is a water tight match container with only a log, so "Be Prepared" and bring your own pen. It is not on the mail box!
