In rook opgaan... Multi-Cache

Op de hoek Nieuwe Ebbingestraat/Kleine Kerkstraat (nu Rotterdammerstraatje geheten) opent Meindert Niemeyer een winkeltje waar hij producten uit de koloniën verkoopt: koffie, thee, specerijen en tabak. Vooral de verkoop van tabak loopt goed, en Theodorus Niemeyer, zijn zoon, gaat zich hier meer op toeleggen. Hij heeft een betere koopmansgeest dan zijn vader, en besluit naast een winkel ook een ‘tabaksfabrijk’ op te richten. In 1848 opent hij deze fabriek, en verkoopt shag onder de merknaam “Het Wapen van Rotterdam”, de naam van het winkelpand van zijn vader. In 1880 besluit hij een groot fabriekspand te bouwen aan het Nieuwe Kerkhof. In 1893 stapt Theodorus uit de zaak, en nemen zijn zoons Willem en Albert Willem de zaak over. Zij besluiten in 1903 om een fabriekspand te bouwen aan de Hoornschedijk, waar vanaf 1904 tabak geproduceerd wordt. De fabriek staat dan nog midden tussen de weilanden. In de jaren die volgen wordt de fabriek aan alle kanten uitgebouwd om plaats te maken voor de steeds toenemende productieactiviteiten. De laatste bouwactiviteit is het kantoorgebouw tegenover de fabriek. Onder Willem en Albert Willem vindt ook voor het eerst export plaats, een activiteit die nu niet meer weg te denken is bij Niemeyer. De fabriek wordt nog door een 5e generatie Niemeyer geleid, voordat het in buitenlandse handen terechtkomt. In de jaren ’60 wordt een gedeelte van de aandelen verkocht aan de Britse Gallaher Group, en in 1999 wordt het door een fusie onderdeel van het concern British American Tobacco.

Van het winkelpand waar Meindert Niemeyer zijn tabaksverkopen begon, is inmiddels niets meer terug te vinden. Van een aantal andere tabaksfabrieken die Groningen rijk is geweest in de 19e en 20e eeuw, zijn er nog wel overblijfselen te vinden. Deze route leidt u langs een aantal van deze punten.

Deze cache is neergelegd ter gelegenheid van het 190-jarig bestaan van de Koninklijke Theodorus Niemeyer. Twee van de cacheleggers zijn werkzaam bij het bedrijf. De cache ligt er met toestemming van de eigenaar en is alleen bereikbaar vanaf de openbare weg. Het is dus niet nodig om het privéterrein te betreden. Gelieve dit dan ook niet te doen!

Het is een stevige wandeling (5 à 6 km). Ook per fiets is de route goed te doen. Om van coördinaat naar coördinaat te komen, dient u op het coördinaat waar u staat goed op te letten om zo het volgende coördinaat te kunnen bepalen. Op elk tussencoördinaat vindt u ook een aanwijzing om tot het eindcoördinaat te komen.

Waar het roken in gebouwen inmiddels verboden is, kun je tegenwoordig op de stations ook niet overal meer je sigaretje of shagje opsteken. Tegenwoordig doe je dat bij dit soort palen….

Onderweg naar het coördinaat ziet u aan de linkerkant in een straatje nog café “De tevreden rookster”. Op het coördinaat heeft vroeger ook een tabaksfabriek gestaan. Het enige wat er nu nog aan herinnert is de gevel van het gebouw. Waar Niemeyer in het begin van de 20e eeuw gericht was op de verkoop van tabak in de provincie Groningen, vonden de verkopen vanuit deze fabriek voornamelijk in Drenthe plaats.

In deze omgeving waren in het begin van de 20e eeuw veel sigarenfabriekjes te vinden. Nu is er eigenlijk niets meer van terug te vinden. De pakhuizen die hier stonden zijn inmiddels allemaal afgebroken en er is een hypermodern gebouw neergezet in het kader van de manifestatie Blue Moon (dit gebouw herbergt nu een restaurant). Dit gangetje loopt niet dood! (maar je kunt ook omlopen)

Naast “Het wapen van Rotterdam” en “Het wapen van Drenthe” had je ook deze tabaksfabriek in Groningen. Ook het naastgelegen pand (zonder de verdieping erop) behoorde toe aan de tabaksfabriek.

Ook op deze plek heeft vroeger een tabaksfabriek gestaan. Tegeltableaus op de gevel laten dit nog duidelijk zien. Vergeet ook niet om even de straat over te steken en de zijkant van dit pand te bewonderen, waar zich nog een tegeltableau bevindt.

Loop van hieruit verder naar N 53 13.I56 E006 34.J63.
Op deze plek bevindt zich nog een mooie gevel van een van de tabaksfabrieken die Groningen in het begin van de vorige eeuw rijk is geweest. Inmiddels is het pand omgebouwd tot een appartementencomplex. Als het hek open is, loop dan ook eens door het pleintje op om de mooie gevel te bewonderen. Geen fabriek, maar wel iets wat met tabak te maken heeft gehad: In dit pand was het Niemeyer tabaksmuseum gevestigd. Spijtig genoeg is vanaf 1 Januari 2011 de collectie niet meer te zien.

March 25th 1819

On the corner of the Nieuwe Ebbingestraat and Kleine Kerkstraat (called Rotterdammerstraatje nowadays) Meindert Niemeyer opens a little store in which he sells products from the colonies: coffee, tea, spices and tobacco. Especially the sales of tobacco goes well, and Theodorus Niemeyer, his son, decides to concentrate on this. He has a better merchantile spirit than his father, and decides to establish a tobacco factory next to the shop. In 1848 he starts a tobacco factory, and sells the tobacco under the name “Het Wapen van Rotterdam”, the name of the store of his father. In 1880 he decides to build a factory at the Nieuwe Kerkhof. In 1893 Theodorus quits the business, and his sons  Willem en Albert Willem take over the business. In 1903 they decide to build a factory along the Hoornschedijk, whereas from 1904 tobacco is being produced. The factory is then still located in between the meadows. In the years to follow, the factory is enlarged over and over again to make room for the expanding business. The last building activity is the office complex across the street. Whereas the sales of the products under Theodorus took place only in the Netherlands,Willem and Albert Willem started selling the products worldwide. Without the export of tobacco, the factory would have ceased to exist a long time ago. A fifth generation Niemeyer led the factory, before it went over into foreign hands. In the 1960’s a part of the shares are sold to the British Gallaher Group, and in 1999 it becomes part of British American Tobacco.

There are no remains of the store where Meindert Niemeyer started the tobacco sales, but there are remains of a couple of other tobacco companies which existed in Groningen in the 19th and 20th century. This route leads you along a couple of these remains.

The cache has been placed to celebrate the 190th birthday of the Koninklijke Theodorus Niemeyer. Two of the cache-owners work at the factory. The cache has been placed with permission of the land owner and is only accessible from the public road. No need to enter private property, so please keep on the public road!

The route is about 5 to 6 kms long. You can either walk or cycle around town. To move from coordinate to coordinate, you have to closely look at the coordinate on which you stand at that moment to calculate the next coordinate. Besides, on every coordinate you will find a clue to calculate the last coordinate and the cache.

Walking towards this coordinate, you pass on your left side the café “De tevreden rookster” (the happy (female) smoker). Having arrived at the coordinate, only the front of the house shows that there used to be a tobacco factory at this place. Whereas Niemeyer mostly sold his tobacco in the province of Groningen, this tobacco factory sold most of its tobacco in the province of Drenthe.

In this area, a lot of cigars factories could be found in the beginning of the 20th century. Nowadays, almost nothing refers to this period. The warehouses located here were all torn down, and where there used to be a tobacco factory, nowadays an extremely progressive building has been built. This building was made to celebrate the manifestation Blue Moon, and it houses a restaurant right now. This is not a blind alley (but you can walk around as well).

This tobacco company existed next to the tobacco companies “Het wapen van Rotterdam” and “Het wapen van Drenthe”. Also the building adjacent to it (without the story) was part of the tobacco company.

This place also lodged a tobacco company. Tile paintings on the face of the house are the remainings of this. Do not forget to cross the street, and look at the other side of the house, where you can also still find a tile painting.

In this alley you can find the remainings of a former tobacco factory. The factory was in use until the 1930’s. Nowadays, the factory houses apartments. When the fence is open, do not forget to take a look at the building at the end of the ally. However, you can also find the information needed for the cache on the tableau at the beginning of this alley.

No factory, but this place was related to tobacco. The Niemeyer tobacco exhibition was housed in this building. This was stopped per 1 January 2011.
