Keld Heads Smelt Mill |
This is a 2 stage multi-cache where the final
co-ordinates are found at the first location.
The first
location is by Keld Heads Smelt Mill where the flues from the lead
ore hearths emerge.
The final
location is at the other end of the flue.
This cache
is a small container that should take a GeoCoin or two, or a
small TB.

Keld
Heads Smelt Mill is associated with the nearby mine complex. The
mine complex is to the south of the smelt mill, and comprises an
engine shed that was used for winding and pumping, chimney, mine
shaft etc. The smelt mill is quite a complex structure. There
wasn't any recorded returns from 1730-1764, but from 1850 to 1888
it produced between 300 to 1100 tons per year of lead, and between
1875 and 1881 averaging about 500 ozs of silver per annum.
Both the mine and
smelt mill are listed monuments with English Heritage. Rather than
describing these sites here, I recommend that you read
this
document. |
When logging your visit please
do not reveal the nature of this cache to those that follow.
Thanks.
It is highly recommended that
you also look at cache GC1NRKY 'Dug's Dip' whilst you are in the
locality. |
