Geocache Description:

The Grovely Ring is a series of 24 caches of various sizes and difficulty. This was the 2nd cache we placed in this series. The 7 mile walk, which could last well over 4 hours, will take you around the Western end of Grovely woods enjoying a variety of scenery from dense woodland to open high elevation downland with spectacular views over the Wiltshire countryside. Success with the Ring will give you the opportunity to visit the Grovely Golden Cache.

Parking place co-ordinated are provided below, these allow the easiest walk and are convenient for the Grovely Golden Cache. However, don’t feel constrained to start here, access is possible from Hanging Langford via the Hollows footpath and from Baverstock. If you want an even longer walk, there are tracks up to Grovely from Wilton at Water Ditchampton and from Wishford with a bit of a climb.

When walking this series each cache contains a vital bit of information, a value of A, B, C, D and E., which should help locate the Grovely Golden Cache. As these values are repeated several times over the series, in theory you could have the required information with only 5 finds, although very unlikely unless you are prepared to do much homework before you start your walk: see Golden Cache listing for details of the short cut. Failing that depending on your chosen route, if it’s not your lucky day, it could take as many as 17 finds to gather the values; good luck.

Be warned comfortable footwear and walking boots are advisable when attempting the Ring. Some paths and tracks are steep in places for short distances and can be very muddy and rutted, particularly in the winter or after heavy rain.

All caches are placed on or within a few feet of public footpaths, bridleways, etc. You will not need to walk deep into the woods, remember game shooting starts on Oct 1st and it would be unadvisible for anyone to be wandering about well off the paths at such times. You should not need to climb fences or even stiles, although you will be required to open and close a couple of field gates; this is all legal as it’s a public right of way but be careful if cattle or sheep are grazing. You will also cross relatively quiet public roads on a couple of occasions, so please be very careful if you have children and dogs along.

Warning: please do not poke your hands down into any hollow tree stumps in the vicinity of this cache; someone has placed a coil of barbwire inside a hollow stump close to the track .

Please hide cache continers well, hopefully as you find them and remember to note the value of that letter A, B, C, D & E.
