Buckden Pike Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mr Truffles: Visited Buckden to have a walk up to this cache to check on it after comments by a cacher just over a week ago that the cache was not where it should be but had been found under some pallets near the cairn.

It was a fabulous morning to heading up to the summit and I was late arriving in Buckden due to traffic problems between Otley and Skipton due to the A59 closure.

It was obvious to me as I approached the cairn and pallets that the ammo can was not there as I could see a plastic bag with log book and few cache box like items in it. So in just over a week the ammo can has been nicked and the log book and a small amount of cache box material was carefully placed in a poly bag - doesn't sound like muggles to me.

The sad thing now is that whoever is responsible, cacher or non cacher, I have had to archive a cache that is well liked and visited and has been up there for a couple of months over 10 years.

I sat down in disgust and had an early lunch before heading down to the CP in glorious sunshine for the drive home.

Thanks to all the legit people who have visited - one of the highlights was StevieP's 5000th cache 10 years ago.

Geocache Description:

The cache has been placed near the summit of Buckden Pike which stands proudly above the village of Buckden at the head of Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales. The summit can be reached from a number of routes but my recommended route for this cache is by using the track and footpaths from the CP via Buckden Rake and Cow Pasture.

Since I started geocaching in 2006 I have often wondered why no geocache has been placed on my favourite Yorkshire Dales mountain – I have now rectified the ‘no cache’ situation. I am grateful for the kind permission granted to me by the National Trust to place a cache here and as such I ask that visitors respect the land and area around the cache site. Before I go into details of the cache I think a little history from me about why I placed a cache on Buckden Pike is appropriate.

I have walked the hills and valleys around the Yorkshire Dales, in particular Wharfedale, for many years including numerous ascents and descents of Buckden Pike. My first ascent was a midnight hike in the late 1960’s but that late night escapade on the pike didn’t put me off – quite the opposite it lured me back time and time again. I have visited this mountain with my family many times and also used it for team building exercises throughout the 1990’s. Now I introduce geocachers to this lovely location. For those geocachers who know Buckden Pike this gives you a reason to return.

There is plenty of parking available on the village car park in Buckden at N54 11.526 W002 05.330. The car park is Pay and Display I’m afraid but the payment contributes to a good cause. For those seeking to avoid payment there are one or two free parking opportunities not too far away from the car park.

Leave the car park via the gate and follow the stoney track up a gradual incline of Buckden Rake. You then follow the signed footpaths via Cow Pasture up to the summit and cache site.

The cache is placed a short distance from the summit cairn and trig point in a location with great views. It can be busy with walkers on Buckden Pike so please use stealth where necessary and rehide the cache as found. There is no need to cause damage to any of the land around the cache site – its is an easy find requiring the simple removal/replacement of a couple of flat stones. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE THIS CACHE OUT IF FROZEN IN AS IT WILL DAMAGE IT.

The cache is an ammo can and it is well marked as a geocache. It contains a log book, pen, pencil, sharpener, cache box card, trade items and FTF card.
