Geocache Description:

Located along the Jeb Stuart Highway. Observe an older and newer CREP program on your way to Damascus.

The “ Mini Maid Series” will have seventeen card caches and then for the eighteenth cache it will be the Old Maid card herself. I found this small mini deck of cards in a cache while getting a few smileys in Boon, NC in January of 2009. The caches will all be in the same type of container, BB (bottle in a bottle) and most will be hidden the same way. If you find one cache you will know what to look for at the next one, maybe. The FTF gift in each will be a Canadian twenty-five cent coin except for the first one and it is a coin from Nicaragua I picked up on a mission trip. Each card represents someone in the work force or in the community. They will be people just like you and I. Nurse Nell, Labtech Lil, Motorcycle Mike, Waitress Wendy, Labby Lovegreen (tree hugger), Miss Alpha bet, Guitar Gary, Cowhand Cal, Mailman Morris, Fisherman Fred, Quarterback Jack, Hosehauler Harry, Backhand Betty, Tutu Terri, Cookie Connie, Moonwalker Wally, Clown’n Clyde and Miss Old Maid. The placement of the caches will have a direct hint to that cards’ character. Hope we all have fun with this series. I’ll have fun trying to find a place for some of these characters and hopefully you will have fun by looking for the reason I planted them in that particular place. I don’t think I will give many hints because yall are so good already at picking off my caches. This will be your hint for the series,”Have you planted your spring bulbs yet?”
Thousands of farmers have made the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) one of Virginia's most active water quality efforts. The program aims to improve Virginia's water quality and wildlife habitat by offering financial incentives, cost-share and rental payments to farmers who voluntarily restore:
• Riparian buffers.
• Grass filter strips.
• Wetlands.
Virginia CREP is divided into two regions. The Chesapeake Bay CREP targets Virginia's entire bay watershed and calls for the planting of 22,000 acres of riparian buffer and filter strips as well as 3,000 acres of wetland restoration. The Southern Rivers CREP ( our area) targets watersheds outside the bay drainage basin and will establish 13,500 acres of riparian buffer and filter strip plantings and 1,500 acres of wetland restoration.
Statewide, these programs are expected to reduce annual nitrogen loads to waterways by more than 710,000 pounds, phosphorus by more than 114,000 pounds and sediment by more than 62,000 tons. The anticipated reductions will help Virginia meet water quality improvement goals, particularly in the Chesapeake Bay drainage basin, in which the state has agreed to reduce nutrient loads by 40 percent.
Sediment from eroded stream banks can degrade water quality and habitat.
How the practices work: The program's rental and cost-share payments will help farmers restore riparian buffers, grass filter strips and wetlands. All CREP-enrolled pasture or cropland will be planted to hardwood trees or native warm season grasses.
A 100-foot wide strip of forest and grass can reduce sediment by 97 percent, nitrogen by 80 percent and phosphorus by 77 percent. The Southern Rivers CREP, in particular, provides for critical habitat for the bobwhite quail, whose population declined 62 percent between 1970 and 1991.

Now the cache is located along the road side with plenty of room to pull off for safety. The farm on the side of the cache was presented the 2000 Clean Water Farm Award. The CREP program is present across the fence and follows the creek/drainage area and the trees that were planted have grown nicely. Now just across and up the road the owner has just signed up and the trees have just been planted with green protective tubes so the varmints can’t cut them off as easley . I believe that Lovegreen Labby would put her stamp of approval on these two land owners. Please be courteous and replace the cache as you found it or better so the next cachers can have a fun and fulfilling find. Log only so BYOP
Study the hint before going!
Thanks

Big O congrads to yobeejackson and Papafuz on being a team and being Co FTF on this cache. I added a hint that might help other cachers on this one. This was a trial drop.
