Geocache Description:

Very small cache that you need to bring your own pen to sign. Also this is on private property with their permission, please respect their property.

This sign that reads ELKs 317 with the Elk’s Emblem on the top has shined in Port Townsend for a very long time. Once at the corner of Taylor and Washington Streets attached to a red building that has BPO Elks carved in cement at the top of its tower. If you go by this old building today, you can see a sign that reads CAFÉ and see how much it resembles the Elks sign, yes that is where the old neon sign was. You are looking at the oldest neon sign in Port Townsend, it was in fact the first neon sign in the city, and thanks to the care given by the Elks it still glows on a dark night on Otto Avenue. The sign was restored in 1996 before it was placed in its present site. The order of Elks began here in Port Townsend back in 1894 and its real first home was that very same building on Taylor Street. There for 100 years leaving 1995 when the building was sold and work began on their present home here on Otto. This is an easy cache, good for most people, perhaps a little trouble with a wheel chair, fine for children. Take a picture of you, your gps and the Elk sign in background and attach to the gallery. Thanks
