Geocache Description:

4WD tracks lead you through a range of coastal vegetation types
including swamps and sheoak bush. Degree confluence S 35.00.000
E118.00.000, will be visited on the way to the nearby
cache.

A confluence is a flowing together, a meeting place. A degree
confluence is the exact spot on the surface of the earth where an
integer degree of latitude and an integer degree of longitude
intersect. The Degree Confluence Project is an organised sampling
of the world. There is a confluence within 79 km of you if you’re
on the surface of the earth.

We have a degree confluence right in our own backyard. Even better, there are 4WD tracks to within 110 metres of the confluence. The last 150 metres to the confluence and then onto the cache is through prickly bush, so we suggest long sleeves, trousers and strong shoes. Leave geo pooches at home as the area is baited.

Park at S34.59.695 E 118.00.073 off Gull Rock Road. Heavy 4WD’s can continue on the track opposite the parking spot. BEWARE! In winter or after rains, the track deteriorates into a quagmire. Enjoy the bush and glimpses of Gull Rock Lake as you follow the track. At S 34.59.984 E117.59.880 you will notice the faintest of wheel ruts leading into the sedges of a flat swampy area. If still with your vehicle, park
nearby on solid ground.

Follow the faint wheel ruts to S34.59.953 E117.59.947. Head into the bush on an even fainter track towards the confluence of S 35.00.000 E118.00.000. The cache is nearby. On your return enjoy views of Gull Rock Lake and the surrounding vegetated dunes.

Back home.

Have fun and enjoy discovering more degree confluences. However, all surrounding degree confluences of S35° and E118° are either way out to sea or in the middle of paddocks on private land except for ……. The Kent River/Irwin Inlet confluence. Now there’s a real challenge.
