Geocache Description:

This is a ten-stage walking tour of various memorials in downtown Stockton, remembering those who put their lives on the line for us. You will use each monument to get the coordinates for the next stage, with a log sheet at the final stage. Our hope is that while you are walking and reading, you will reflect on these people – many of whom were friends and neighbors - who put their lives on the line to give you the life & liberty you now enjoy.

STAGE ONE: You will find metered parking near the above coordinates – quarters only, but you get an hour per quarter. As you arrive, you will see our first hero waving to greet you. This is a person who helped our nation avoid another bloody civil war, and secure the rights of many. For the coordinates to stage Two use the numbers off of this monument. axbx-xxcx N 37 57.5bc W 121 17.5ac STAGE TWO: Another national hero who greatly impacted California. He worked hard to make sure that people were treated with fairness and equality, no matter what job they held. Later in life, his focus turned to education, and his office was lined with hundreds of books ranging in subject from philosophy, economics, cooperatives, and unions, to biographies of Gandhi and the Kennedys. For the coordinates to stage Three use the numbers off of this monument. $x,xxa, bxx xxxc-xxxd N 37 57.abd W 121 17.acd STAGE THREE: These heroes were not shown any gratitude for their sacrifice at the time. Please offer up a word of gratitude now. For the coordinates to stage Four use the numbers off of this monument. Stockton Junior Women's Club xabx N 37 57.4bb W 121 17.56a STAGE FOUR: This monument remembers people from Stockton who served in four wars of the previous century. Thousands walk past it for public gatherings and entertainment. Remember that it is because of their service and sacrifice that we can have public gatherings and entertainment. For the coordinates to stage Six (Stage Five has been removed) use the numbers off of this monument. a, bxxx Post xc N 37 57.477 W 121 17.acb Stage Five was heavily vandalized. It was a Firefighters memorial, which included a quote from the Bible which is the real theme of this series: John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends." STAGE SIX: “Dedicated to all men and women of Stockton, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice…” For the coordinates to stage Seven use the numbers off of this monument. May xa, xbcx December xdxx September xxex N 37 57.b8a W121 17.ecd STAGE SEVEN: These are heroes from San Joaquin County who’s service cost them their lives, including my own brother… “no greater love…” For the coordinates to stage Eight use the numbers off of this monument. Dale E. Newby xxxa George R. Turner xxbx Timothy D. White (my brother) xxcx Henry R. Baker xxxd Benjamin Ingram xxxe Frank Blondin xxxf N 37 57.abc W121 17.def STAGE EIGHT: Here is a large rose, commemorating the day that the Mexican government gave to Captain Charles M. Weber the land that would become Stockton. For the coordinates to stage Nine, use the numbers off of this monument. January xa, xxxb xx.c degrees N 37 57.bcc W 121.17.a7b STAGE NINE: This is the actual site where one of Stockton’s heroes fell. Please offer up words of thanks for his sacrifice. To get to stage ten, take a few steps NW and have a seat on the nearest bench. STAGE TEN: Please take some time to consider all the names and events you have just explored. This is a VERY busy area, yet most of the people passing by are totally unaware of the sacrifices that were given so that they could enjoy what they are doing now. “No greater love…than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” Scoot all the way to the right side of the bench and reach under. The cache container is a small magnetic box. This is a VERY high muggle area, so please try to be sly.
