The idea for a public library in Fulton was born in 1907 by the Fulton Women’s Club. The following year, the first library opened in temporary quarters - two rooms rented in the Odd Fellows Building. With a $12,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie and strong support of the community, the cornerstone for a new library was laid on November 2, 1911. The building was completed in 1912 and started with a collection of less than 500 books. Through the years, growth continued and many changes were made to the library. In 1950, a telephone was installed. In 1951, a hand railing was added to the front steps of the building. Not enough money was available for two railings so one was placed down the center of the steps at a cost of $34.18. In 1958, a room was set aside for children and regular story hours began the following year. In January of 1962, the Fulton Free Public Library consolidated with the Callaway County Public Library, thereby becoming part of the Daniel Boone Regional Library system. The library was remodeled in 1967 and in 1987 the front doors of a completed addition were opened for the first time. Major upgrades and remodeling occurred again in 2004 that included a new main ground level entrance and the addition of a new computer network. The Callaway County Public Library celebrated its centennial in 2008 with programs throughout the month of July.
