This is the sad tale of Mary Kavanagh, 75, from Penmaen, who was brutally murdered in her garden in Oct 1829.
The motive was burglary for her house was found ransacked and 2 watches that used to hang on her mantlepiece were missing but her life savings, hidden in a locked oak chest, of approx £120 were not found. On a small round table there was found an open testament and a pair of spectacles, showing Mary to be a pious widow.
The Cambrian newspaper reported the way the body was found in a gruesome way. More of which can be found in Geoff Brookes' book "Stories in Welsh Stone"
The gravestone erected in Penrice as much as a year later, although very worn, bears the inscription
