Geocache Description:

About this Cache

This is one of three caches placed around Hatherton Reservoir.

This cache can be reached without climbing on or over the wooden perimeter fence.

A bit of local history

Hatherton Reservoir is in Cheslyn Hay on the border with Bridgtown, Cannock.

The reservoir used to be a lot larger than it is now, but some of it was lost due the building of the adjacent roads, the latest being the M6 Toll road, which runs alongside it.

In the 1840's the reservoir was known as ‘Walkmill Reservoir’ and was it used by the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal Company to feed the Hatherton (Churchbridge) branch of the canal.

There was also a railway line close to the reservoir which was used to transport coal from Hawkins Colliery and tiles from Rosemary Tiles. One of the engines is now believed to be at Chasewater Country Park.

How it looks today

This is now a very well maintained picturesque area.

There is a free car park situated off Coppice Lane and a well defined solid footpath which takes you around the lakes.

Whilst enjoying a short circular stroll of just over a mile you will see many species of water fowl, wild birds and other animals.

There are a number of benches around the lakes where you can stop to enjoy the scenery.
