Geocache Description:

A two mile walk out and back across the Severn flood plain to the site of old salmon putchers. Terrain comprises a dirt lane and grass paths. Not suitable for wheelchairs but OK for children. There are cattle here so dogs on leads please.

Parking is available on Stockwell lane at coordinates N51 42.605, W002.33.264.

Walk down the road and take the rough lane to the right over the metal stile, DO NOT head straight on along the tarmac lane towards the dairy. After about half a mile you will go under the railway line. If the tunnel is too muddy there is a marked crossing over the railway nearby, please take care and follow the instructions on the signs.

Across the fields is a kissing gate at co-ordinates N51 41.935, W002 32.813 you are not far from the cache once through here.

The cache is near to the site of some Severn Salmon Putchers. You will see the frames that jut out into the river. The putcher is a funnel shaped fishing trap made from willow and hazel. Eighteen straight rods of two to three year old withy are bound together with four or five hoops of woven willow. The open end of the putcher is 24" in diameter narrowing to 4" over its 60" length.
Most of these putcher weirs faced upstream and would catch fish on the ebb tide. Once entering the funnel the salmon would not be able to turn and would be caught in the narrow end.
As the tide recedes the putcher ranks become exposed and the fisherman would have to harvest the fish before the tide turned, once again engulfing the weir.
This is my first cache.Hope you enjoy it. When you have found it please replace exactly as covered as it floods aorund here from time to time!!
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES THE CACHE MAY BECOME IMMERSED SO ANY TRACKABLES/SWOPS MAY BECOME WET PLEASE REPORT ANY INGRESS OF WATER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Thanks
