Geocache Description:

Located along SR 600 just before coming into the Whitetop Community. If turning off SR 58 onto #600 from the Whitetop Community it will be on your right going up. There is room to safely pull off both ways, snow will change the easy pull off note into “ Be careful”. It was 34 degrees and lightly snowing and foggy when this one was planted. 3913 ft 100 readings with 8 ft acuracy.

The “ Mini Maid Series” will have seventeen card caches and then for the eighteenth cache it will be the Old Maid card herself. I found this small mini deck of cards in a cache while getting a few smileys in Boon, NC in January of 2009. The caches will all be in the same type of container, BB (bottle in a bottle) and most will be hidden the same way. If you find one cache you will know what to look for at the next one, maybe. The FTF gift in each will be a Canadian twenty-five cent coin except for the first one and it is a coin from Nicaragua I picked up on a mission trip. Each card represents someone in the work force or in the community. They will be people just like you and I. Nurse Nell, Labtech Lil, Motorcycle Mike, Waitress Wendy, Labby Lovegreen (tree hugger), Miss Alpha bet, Guitar Gary, Cowhand Cal, Mailman Morris, Fisherman Fred, Quarterback Jack, Hosehauler Harry, Backhand Betty, Tutu Terri, Cookie Connie, Moonwalker Wally, Clown’n Clyde and Miss Old Maid. The placement of the caches will have a direct hint to that cards’ character. Hope we all have fun with this series. I’ll have fun trying to find a place for some of these characters and hopefully you will have fun by looking for the reason I planted them in that particular place. I don’t think I will give many hints because yall are so good already at picking off my caches. This will be your hint for the series,”Have you planted your spring bulbs yet?”

You just got to appreciate those volunteer Firemen. Before moving away from the Abingdon area I served on the AVFD for about six years. I have hauled, washed, and hung up my share of hose. All that plus keeping the equipment clean and serviced has to be preformed after returning from a call, cold, tired, sleepy it has to be done. Someone’s life or the firefighters’ well being could depend on the equipment next time out. Most of the Volunteer Fire Departments get some Federal, State or County funds but not enough to properly care for the need of repair and replacement of new equipment. Because of the lack of finances a lot of the groups turn to events to raise money like the one I went to today ”Whitetop Mountain Maple Festival”, Yum Yum and the “ Ramp Festival” in May then the “Sorghum Molasses Festival” in October.
If you came up Highway 58 you passed the Hosehauler Hangout. Now if you came over the mountain to see what you could see ( on #600) you need to turn right to see the Hangout. If going to one of the three events I mentioned turn left off of #600 and keep going until you see Mt. Rogers Combined School on your right. Regular and buckwheat pancakes slide down the old neck tube real easy on a cool Spring day. The Hangout and the School are both used during these events.
BYOP and watch those muggles. Please place everything back as you found it or better so the cachers to follow will have good experience .

Thanks
