Micro cache hanging on a tree overlooking the Losen Slote Creek in
Little Ferry, NJ
The name of this creek is a bit redundant since slote is the Dutch
word for creek, but it's a nice spot in a nice park. Another
unexpected Meadowlands Gem.
You may be able to reach it from Chapman Drive at the End of Eckel
Road, I don't know, but if you can you'll only save a few feet, and
you'll lose out on a nice walk through the woods. Park instead, at
the listed parking coordinates, at the park entrance. There's a
Hockey Rink and a restroom, some benches, and ample parking spots.
The entrance could use a little CITO, but as you enter the woods,
it gets nicer and nicer. By the time you get to the Creek, you'll
be wondering if you're still in Bergen County.
The borough of Little Ferry owns and operates this park that was
designed and constructed by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission,
a state group that is doing valuable work to reclaim the abused
Meadowlands.
Please note that the park is adjacent to the BCUA (Bergen
County Utilities Authority) Nature Preserve, which is open to the
public but only with advance permission. The preserve is an old
brick making site, a large pond, Mehrhof Pond was once a clay pit.
It's a popular site for birders. Advance permission needs to be
gained to enter, an insurance waiver needs to be signed, it isn't
open on weekends or holidays. You also need to be part of an
organized group. It seems like a fantastic idea for an event cache
;) except for the no-weekends part, I'll have to think about it! In
the meantime, there is no need to enter the BCUA preserve to
reach this cache. When you enter Losen Slote Creek Park, you'll
cross a small wooden bridge and come to a fence with an opening,
and a pole to prevent vehicles from entering. After a few hundred
feet there is another fence, a newer fence with barbed wire at the
top. Stay on the Losen Slote side of this fence. Some locals cut
the gate open and removed the sign, but that doesn't make it legal
to enter! Other gates that you will see in the park, still have the
BCUA signs on them. Please respect them. The shortest approach to
the cache is via the Losen Slote trails anyway.
There are many windy unmarked trails through this little patch of
woods. I hope you enjoy the walk.
