Geocache Description:

Cache is 35mm canister with a logbook.

Poynton is a thriving community of 16,000 inhabitants, but with a genuine village atmosphere. It lies in the North West of England, 7 miles north from Macclesfield, 5 miles south of Stockport and 174 miles north (slightly to the west) of London.

Poynton is a fairly prosperous town surrounded by 'green belt' to preserve the countryside, where building is prohibited. It lies in the far north east of the county of Cheshire just to the south of the most southern part of Greater Manchester and just to the west of the Pennine hills which form the backbone of northern England.

Close by is Lyme Park with its hall, woodland walks, deer and the hall which was originally a Tudor house. Also Macclesfield canal with its marina at Higher Poynton.

There are a number of churches including St. George's (church of England), Methodist, Baptist, Roman Catholic and Christian Fellowship. St. George's Parish Church dominates the centre of Poynton.

There is one high school (children 11-18) which is one of the largest in Cheshire, and 5 primary schools (children 5-10) which regularly achieve amongst the highest results in the country.

There are a number of pubs including the Miners Arms, The Boars Head, the Bull, the Farmers Arms and the Vernon Arms. The 'Thieves Neck' pub is just down the road in Woodford.

There is a monthly community newspaper 'The Poynton Post' which is free to all residents.

There are two small industrial estates to the south of the village.

The Civic centre has a hall, a library and a new medical complex. There is large annual agricultural show in August called Poynton Show. The village has a number of restaurants including the Deeba Indian restaurant and the Beijing Chinese restaurant. The main shopping street is called Park Lane and boasts some excellent shops such as Susie Blues ladies fashion shop.

There is a sports club which includes cricket, football, tennis, table tennis, hockey, bowls, lacrosse and squash sections.

Poynton Leisure Centre is attached to the high school and has a swimming pool, gymnasium and large sports hall together with outdoor sports facilities.

There is a railway station and several elderly peoples homes and nursing homes.

Poynton has it's own fire station and a sub police station.

Poynton Park is on the north side of the town and was the site of Poynton Manor probably since the 13th century. One of lords of the manor built a large pool (small lake !) in the gardens now known as Poynton Pool.
