On November 18, 1863, President Lincoln arrived by train in
Gettysburg. He was the guest of David Wills, Esq. Mr. Wills was the
proprietor of the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, and he had
donated a significant number of graves for the Union Soldiers who
died in Gettysburg. It was to be called the Soldiers' Cemetery, and
Mr. Wills was having a dedication ceremony. President Lincoln was
actually a last-minute invitee, and not the keynote speaker. He was
just asked "to say a few words." Those words, however, would go
down in history as one of the three greatest speeches in American
history. (JFK's "Ask not what you can do" speech, and MLK, Jr.'s "I
have a Dream" are the other two.)
When you arrive at this location, locate the cache at the above
coordinates. Then, in addition to the Wills House, you will also
find a statue of President Lincoln with someone else. There is much
debate about who exactly this is, some of the locals just call him
Perry Como.
There is also a memorial brick walkway around the square, the House
of Bender which was standing in 1863, and the Historic Gettysburg
Hotel. Just around the corner is the Cannonball Malt Shop. Below
the third window from the right on the second floor, you can see
the repaired cannonball hole left fromt he battle. Spend some time
and enjoy our beautiful downtown area. There are many unique and
wonderful things to see besides the Battlefield itself.
NOW TO CLAIM THE CACHE You must find the little nano
cache.
PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL OF MUGGLES!! We have placed
this one in a location which should help you disquise your
activities. So, just "relax" while you sign the log. We hope this
cache lasts a long time, but it will take every finder completing
it unnoticed.
NEXT take a picture of yourself, not just your GPSr, with
the statue, and post it with you log. In you log, tell us who you
think the other figure is. There are no right answers. Remember,
logs without pictures will be deleted.
Come on, be creative! Don't just stand there!!
There is meter parking in the downtown area, so bring some change
with you, or if you want to spend any significant amount of time
downtown, there is a parking garage at Racehorse Alley just behind
the Historic Gettysburg Hotel. It is $1 / hour.
