Geocache Description:

Visit the site of New Zealand's first sanatorium. Nothing to see now except a few bricks amongst a scruffy bit of plantation forest...

Placed with permission of City forests. Access is permitted on weekends, public holidays and weekday evenings after 6pm; i.e. not during working hours.

From the entry waypoint, go a few metres into the pines and then follow the very short marked route to the cache. In the same area you will see holly bushes, laurel trees and lily-of-the-valley growing, remnants of the homestead plantings. The cache is a black 10 litre pail. Please ensure that the lid clicks back in place all around the top to keep the cache waterproof.

The Nordrach Cottage Sanatorium, "for the open-air cure on scientific lines of pulmonary consumption and other tubercular diseases" was established in 1899 by Dr R S Stephenson. It accommodated ten patients, each in a separate bedroom. "Every facility is afforded by the character of the surrounding country for hill-climbing, which is so valuable a respiratory exercise." In 1909 it was sold to Dr Hastings and continued for some years as a private sanatorium.

A folder with newspaper photos of the sanatorium and some information is inside the cache. Before the present crop of pines grew, a concrete foundation slab and remains of plumbing were visible. If you can find them again, please pass on the co-ordinates.

The 60 acres of sanatorium grounds included the Craiglowan Falls- why not visit them next?
