A 20 minute walk to an attractive aqueduct on the 1881 Silverstream water race.
Placed with permission from City Forests. Access is permitted on weekends, public holidays and weekday evenings after 6pm; i.e. not during working hours.
City Forests requests that you do not climb on the aqueduct. It is private property on the other side.
You will find a print-out of Antony Hamel's map useful if you plan to explore the tracks past the aqueduct.
Park at the locked gate at the bottom end of Longridge Rd, which turns off the Whare Flat-Flagstaff Rd by the old Whare Flat school [marked (1) on the map]. Walk along Longridge Rd and turn left up McIntyres Rd to where it crosses the water-race [marked (5) on the map]. Turn left and follow the water race to the cache.
Once you’ve seen the aqueduct and found the clear 2.3 litre snaplock cache, there is an enjoyable round trip back to your car. However, you will need to be confident following unmarked tracks to use this route.
NOTE: this area is likely to be logged shortly, in which case the track will probably be blocked.
Continue along the water race nearly to the McQuilkans Creek intake sluicegate. Turn right onto a well-used track leading to the end of McIntyres Rd.
Walk along the road until you see a fabric tie on your left, at S 45 49.301 E 170 26.236, marking the track entry. Follow this short track, going around a fallen pine tree at one point, until you reach the three-way track junction, at S45 49.277 E 170 26.265 [marked (3) on map].
Here you will see a track going upstream to Craiglowan Falls. To return to Whare Flat, go straight ahead, cross McQuilkans Creek and follow the road back to your car.
