Geocache Description:

A camo'd beach safe, bring a writing instrument.

This is a U.S. Dept of the Interior earthquake research benchmark just off the new Mummy Mountain trail. Just a little bit south of here the trail takes you within 10 ft. of a sheer 50 ft. cliff with a stunning view of the "Mendoza Ranch Secret Trailhead" (GC1PBNP) and the "In Memory of the N7383A Passengers" (GC1PBXR) caches.

As you can see this is a research benchmark, and I was hoping it would be a two-for-one deal, but the benchmark isn't listed and I haven't figured what needs to be done to get it into the index.

When this cache was placed it wasn't even a trail yet, just a series of red flags and stones marking the route. I was alerted and led to this trail by my friend Curt, one of the many park volunteers. Reading through the proposed master plan for the Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch county park you discover that the trail name will be the Mummy Mountain Trail and is part of the phase 3 trail building effort. It will be somewhat difficult to get to this cache initially and the terrain difficulty reflects that. When the trail is finished the difficulty will be bumped down. It's best to head west on the Mendoza Ranch Trail and when you approach the crest of the grassy ridge then head up the ridge towards the cache. You should have nothing but grassland to approach this cache.
