Geocache Description:

Like most cachers, I like to travel around a bit. As I go from place to place, one of the things I observe is actually something that is missing. In Bellingham and greater Whatcom County we have an abundance of parks and green spaces available for use. We are fortunate that these areas are of high importance to the community in whole and that they are continuing to be supported and developed.

The North Lake Whatcom Park is such an area. It includes the Hertz trail, which follows the old Blue Canyon Railroad grade along the shores of Lake Whatcom. This trail is an easy 3.1 mile trail that is perfect for riding bikes. And yes, there are caches along that trail. A second trail, the Powerline Trail, goes off in the other direction through a beautiful wooded area that borders Smith Creek. Originally developed by an avid mountain biker, the maintenance of the trail was eventually handed over to the Whatcom County Parks department. The Whatcom County Parks website’s description of the trail is as follows:

“Get a workout heading up steeply through the forest from the upper parking lot to join the BPA Powerline access road as it climbs past extensive views of Lake Whatcom. Unlimited distance.” (www.co.whatcom.wa.us/parks/parklist.jsp).

The cache is along this trail, placed at the base of a nurse stump/offspring within 15 feet of the trail. If you continue on the trail, you will run into the power line road and they weren’t kidding, the road and the views, go on forever. There is a cache up in them there hills if you are so inclined (so to speak!).

Recently, I met the mountain biker who created this trail. I ran into him on another trail he has created a bit further up the hill so keep a watch for future caches and bring a bike if you like to ride.
