¼ litre plastic clip-lock box box containing a log book and pencil and a few other bits and bobs. There's parking at grid ref NY24910 32362, just past Peter House Farm with space for 4 or 5 cars. Good, easy walking on part of the Cumbria Way long-distance path at the start of the ascent, past Dash Falls on the way and then a stiff climb up the fell side to the summit.
Bakestall (the name of the summit, not the fell) is one of the summits that can make a great approach to Skiddaw along a summit ridge taking in Broad End. With an early start and plenty of energy the whole circuit of the Back O’Skiddaw tops can be done, mainly utilizing the Cumbria Way. Beware of sudden mists rising up from the valley which can obscure the tops even on the sunniest day. A quick check of the fell forecast is advisable before setting out unless you don’t mind missing the glorious views from the summit.
Keep a watch out for black grouse (not easy to see in all the heather but highly audible!
