This cache is a traditional small cache and it should be an easy find. It is an 750 ml LnL plastic container. It is a view on Heroldsbay. This place holds many memories from my late father. This was one of his favourite fishing areas when he was still with us.
My brother dives at regular intervals at this location. He collects the sinkers that are lost by fishermen. In this area there are huge holes where the sinkers collect with time due to the wave action and it is easy to remove. The sinkers are then melted down as bars. The bars are then stocked and sold in bulk to recover some of his diving cost. It is sometimes quite funny to see what people use as sinkers. During one of these dives one of the fishermen recognized one of his sinkers with his initials on it and wanted it back. My brother told him the “The sea has taken it and he gave it to me, you want it then you pay for it, this is the rule of the sea”. To cut the long story short he was not a very happy person.
In this area we spotted a massive great white shark when I was about 10 years old. My brother was busy with a dive when this monster moved in and started to circle where he went down. This one was by far the biggest one ever seen by my family. Not even in the open seas. My father got worried when dive time elapsed with no sign of my brother. Twenty minutes after final dive my brother came crawling up the hill from our behind. He swam down to the bottom and was swimming around the rocks at Rooikransies to get away from this shark. He was a little bit shaken and 30 years later he never met a similar one.
Cachers please take note:
This is a dangerous area – a slip could cause death. To slip you must do something extremely wrong but the risk is present. A normal person doing the normal thing in average conditions should not have any problem finding the cache. However, it is my duty to inform you of the risk. To mitigate the risk the cache is therefore right next to the pathway in a safe area and no strange moves need to be done. Find the pathway and keep on it until you find the big rock on your left hand side while walking in the direction of Victoria Bay. While removing the rocks please sit down to ensure that you do not loose your balance. Please keep children away from this area. Please keep your eye on the pathway and not on the GPS. If you have to look at your GPS please stop and look at it. If you feel unsure or uncomfortable or you have any bad feelings please leave this cache. There are other caches. If you suffer from dizzy spells or you do not like heights then this cache is not for you. Take short little steps and make sure of your footing. If the foot path is wet or it is misty or icy or the wind is blowing leave it for another day unless you know your own ability.
