Chimacum Creek was once a healthy, vibrant,
meandering creek thriving with native coho, summer and fall chum,
and steelhead. But dairy farmers moved into the Chimacum Valley,
and needing a more efficient way to access the creek water, they
straightened Chimacum Creek and channelized the stream. By
straightening the creek and removing the forests, the water moved
too fast for young fish to survive, and by the 1960's 90% of the
salmon population in the creek was gone.
Concerned citizens, fisherman, and
environmentalists banded together in an attempt to raise
consciousness of the situation, and in 1991 a volunteer project was
started to reintroduce summer chum to the creek. Today lower parts
of the creek have been replanted with native trees in hopes of
providing shade for the young salmon, steelhead and
cuthroat.
The cache is located along Chimacum Creek at H.J.
Carroll Park on SR 19 just 20 minutes South of Port Townsend. DAY
USE ONLY. This is an all accessible park available for picnics,
frisbee golf, soccer and baseball games or walking, jogging or
biking on the one-mile wooded loop.
You're looking for an ammo can. This is an
excellent location for dropping coins and other trackables. Please
be gentle with the landscaping as you explore this wonderful
park.
