Geocache Description:

This is the 1st in a series of 14 caches plus a bonus cache set around 3 very beautiful traditional Sussex villages.

No1

Suggested parking is in the village of Vines Cross where there is plenty of on and off road parking.

N 50° 56.303 E 000° 16.045 is the Brewers Arms PH car park

This series superceeds the previous "Simply Sussex" series set last year. I decided to expand the series and re-positioned many of the previous caches. So although the same route is taken these are all new caches.

Each cache contains bonus co-ordinates which you will need to collect to find the bonus cache which is a regular ammo box.

Many of the bonus co-ords are repeated in the caches so if you miss any (you know you have done) there is a chance of finding the missing clue later.

History

Sussex Ironworks
Iron was made in the Weald from pre-Roman times until the beginning of the 19th century. Its legacy is recalled by a host of place names, such as Minepit Wood and Forge Lane, by the hammer and furnace ponds which survive in the landscape, and by the cast-iron graveslabs and firebacks that can be seen, respectively, in Wealden churches and farmhouses. During the first part of the Roman occupation, and again, in the 16th and early-17th centuries, the Weald was the most important iron-producing region in the British Isles. Over 800 iron-making sites have been identified in the Weald, and more are discovered each year.

Look out for the iron rich streams that are very red in colour due to the rich mineral deposits.

There are a number of stiles on this route and some may be tricky for larger dogs.
Stout walking boots is a must, it is very muddy and wet in places during winter and after heavy rain.

This series looks particularly nice in the spring when you will see many wild flowers and carpets of wood anenomes and bluebells.

Distance is 5.3 miles approximately.

Good luck and have fun.
