In the past humans have used heathland to graze their livestock and collect materials such as firewood and Bracken. These activities have helped the heathland to survive. Iping Common is jointly managed as a Local Nature Reserve by the Sussex Downs Conservation Board and the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It now part of the proposed South Downs National Park. Follow the Heathland Trail and find out why the
heathlands are important.
This is a lovely circular walk, lots of dog walkers, You will need to be discrete and cautious at times.
The Common is home to protected bird species including Woodlarks, Nightjars and the Dartford Warbler. From 1 March - 31 July, all dogs must be walked on leads to allow these birds to nest. If you're lucky you may well spot the buzzards circling overhead. The common is also home to reptiles, eg lizards and snakes and the Trusts often hold walks during the summer months.
The cache is a brown / green ammo box. It contains lots of swag, Please put something in if you take something out. Stealth is required on this one! Please re cover when replacing the cache.
