Geocache Description:

Eng:
Gotland is literally full of old limestone quarries. The nature has given the island good conditions for this type of industry and lime stone burning has occurred since the Middle Age. During year 1600 – 1700 the limestone patrons were the most important persons on Gotland. The limestone-burning in Bläse started during the 1850’es under guidance of Carl August Cleve, who some years earlier wrecked with a small cargo boat close to.
The golden age of Bläse was between 1920 and 1930. At that time as many as 140 persons worked here. The limestone burning stopped in 1946, but they continued quarrying limestone abt. 10 more years. In 1983 parts of the factory were renovated and opened as a museum in 1985.
Close to the factory is the old quarry. One of the few sections of railway on Gotland led to the place – a narrow-gauge railway built in 1893, which carried the limestone from the quarry to the ovens. From the beginning, the goods wagons were pulled by horses, but in 1895 a steam locomotive was bought in.
