Geocache Description:

A nano in the hamlet of Saurin.

The North Simcoe Railway was originally constructed in 1879 to carry passengers and freight between Colwell (near Barrie) and Penetanguishene. At the time the Midland/Penetanguishene area was a major lumber area harvesting the the white pine forests in the area. In Penetang, at the end of the railway, stands the Beck lumber and furniture plant (now the Penetang Museum) and the centre of the lumber industry.

This cache is placed in the little hamlet of Saurin just north of Elmvale. Elmvale was the major train stop here on the railway, but in the tradition of the time, flagstops such as Saurin where you literally flagged down the train existed to serve as the major transportation service for the area. This spot was also the site of collision between a passenger and a freight train.

Please respect the neighbours and do not cache at night. The cache is on the rail trail right of way and stick to the trail.
