Geocache Description:

PORTO MONIZ BELOW!

Porto Moniz, whose name is believed to relate to Francisco Moniz who was married with one of the grand daughters of Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of the Madeira island, is the most north-western point of the island and also one of the most spectacular.
When travelling from Funchal, you should plan to be away for most of the day. Probably the most scenic route is the journey along the north coast from Santana all the way to the Porto Moniz with its beautiful natural bathing pools – undoubtedly its main attraction. Surrounded by bizarre lava rocks, these shallow pools are filled by the tide with crystal clear water and are a favourite bathing venue for the locals.
Porto Moniz boasts a recent promenade connecting the swimming pools to the pier, featuring green areas, snack bars, several view points and the 'Living Science Centre' (Centro de Ciência Viva).
Porto Moniz is also a significant wine growing and fishing region with an important cattle fair that usually takes place during one of the summer months.
Leaving Porto Moniz on the road leading up to Paúl da Serra, a 1600 m high (5250 ft) plateau, you will be rewarded with spectacular sceneries to round off your island exploration day.
The maintenance of this cache will be the responsability of my friend Bacalhau.
