Geocache Description:

Compression Station #12: GTN Sunriver

These compressor stations are spaced about 50-60 miles apart along the GTN transmission pipeline, from the Canadian gas field source to the final distribution in Southern California. Line pressures can be adjusted to control the velocity of the gas in the pipeline.

Typical line velocity is 30 miles per hour and gas can be "parked" in segments of the pipeline to adjust for demand. The gas in a segment of pipe between two compression stations is called a "linepack" and can be adjusted in velocity remotely to account for fluctuations in demand. Line pressures range from 200 PSI to 1,500 PSI, with the steel transmission pipes ranging 20-42 inches in diameter.

Jet engines are used to compress the gas, using bleed gas as fuel for the jet. A similar station (#11) is located alongside Hwy 26, east of Pine Ridge. Some stations have small landing strips for servicing the station. Both this station and #11 have such landing strips for STOL aircraft.

The ladder-like array in the center of this complex is likely a heat-exchanger, designed to extract heat from the gas once it is compressed. The plastic tubs in the service yard are for storage of the oil used in the compression process.
